Numerous research studies find that the spouses of problem players often feel angry, depressed and "distful" of the player. (Official Gazette of Gaming Issues, Bulletin 31, 2015) And it does not miss me. Pathological players can lie, cheat and even steal to keep feeding their addiction. In fact, a tough but commonly repeated question among those who deal with this disease makes, "How do you know an addict is lying?" Answer: "Your lips move. "In short, deception is a very real part of mental health disorder known as addiction, regardless of whether the pathology in question refers to drugs, alcohol, food, sex or gambling. Why does anyone lie to those they love? Rationalities vary — and none of them necessarily excuses behavior. Sometimes addicts remain trapped in denial, unable to admit the true depth and breadth of their problem to anyone, even those they love. Think of it as the game many of us learned in childhood when we feared the "bogeyman" in the closet. We dare to believe that if we simply close our eyes and pretend that HE does not exist, our greatest fears would evaporate. Even strong and capable adults can predetermin themselves to this thought. Some addicts are convinced that they are just a roll of redeeming and overcoming their "temporal" errors. Your self-talking revolves around how you will quickly recover all losses on this next bet so why alter my spouse right now? They cling to the wrong and self-delegated belief that a more real bet will be the "great victory" that cleans the board. In fact, it's really just an elaborate permission to keep the game. Others deeply fear the consequences of cleansing. Will my husband leave me? Can I go to jail? How am I going to face my friends, coworkers and neighbors – no matter my children?" The truth equates public disclosure and the real possibility of shame, ridicule and even rejection. Although it is difficult for many to understand, addicts often live every day trapped in a downward spiral. Your anxiety about your inability to control problem behavior and its consequences causes stress, raising cortisol levels in your brain. Cortisol results in all the symptoms that we associate with being "student", heartbeat racing, sweated palms, inability to concentrate and more. It is actually extremely harmful to the brain and general health to bathe in frequent doses of cortisol, leading to numerous diseases and even killing certain brain cells. Thus, the brain, constantly tuned to its own chemical balance, begins to push for dopamine and serotonin to counter the cortisol. And guess what solves the chemical dilemma of the brain? The game triggers a dopamine and serotonin flood. The player feels content, happy and even euphoric – until his luck is exhausted again. It is important that families understand the complex and connected physical and emotional problems facing the addict. It offers context and some basis for understanding, if not empathy. However, the greatest knowledge does not erase or mitigate the anger, pain and sadness of being lied to by someone we love. The constant agitation of living with addiction can cause real damage to the physical and mental well-being of all those affected by it. Family members can benefit from the ability to address their concerns in a safe and confidential environment and learn to cope with strategies that improve their mental peace and help them to better respond to financial realities and other worrying realities, whether the player seeks help or not.
