The refusal of parents to medical treatment based on religious and/or cultural beliefs: Law, ethical principles and clinical implications SummaryWhen parents apply religious or cultural beliefs about spiritual healing, healing of faith, or preference for prayer on traditional medical care for children, concerns are developed. Medical care is considered to be one of the most basic needs of all people, and yet parents may choose to apply religious or cultural beliefs rather than traditional Western medical care for their children. Because members of religious groups who have beliefs about prayer and health care of children are growing, the issue is of great importance to pediatric health professionals. This article describes the parental refusal of medical care, and analyzes legal, ethical and clinical implications.
